Esterita Austin
Portraiture — With a Twist

This is a class for beginners as well as advanced. You will be taken, step-by-step, through a very orderly yet creative method of creating expressive portraiture. Rembrandt, La Tour, and Carravagio all incorporated the technique of using a light source from a single direction to create drama and mystery in their imagery. Using age-old compositional techniques, you will create modern day portraits using light and dark as our tools of intrigue. You will start from your own photograph. Lab Fee: $20.00

Susan Carlson
Cutting Loose

Susan’s newest class combines aspects of her earlier classes with her evolving techniques of fabric collage. In this class Susan demonstrates a looser approach to the piecing and assembly of a wall quilt. The approach taken will be a painterly one. Emphasis will be placed on the collage piecing process. Students will sketch their design onto a foundation fabric and proceed to fill in the design with fabrics of their choice. Students will be shown how to create designs from their own subject matter, but simple designs of Susan’s will be available if needed.

Ruth B. McDowell
Designing from Nature

We begin the class with an introduction to the methods and techniques I have found successful in my quilts. Then, using the images the students bring, we will discuss the translation of images from nature into a pieced quilt design. Each student will begin their own pieced design, using subjects and seaming techniques attractive to them. Individual time with each student will help them find options and solutions. Some students will work on developing a simple design and be able to finish the top of the quilt; others may choose a more complex image, make the design and template pattern and finish the auditioning of fabric, but not complete the sewing process in class.

Reaching Beyond Tradition with Foundation Paper Piecing

Students will have the opportunity to learn a process, which simplifies and minimizes waste that has come to be associated with many common foundation paper piecing methods. Overlapping Circles

Using the teacher’s class-handout patterns, you will enjoy developing the interplay of fabrics to create circles which appear to overlap. With the teacher’s guidance in fabric selection, you will be able to make some of the circles appear to lap behind the next circle while others will appear to lap over another circle. Following work with the prepared designs, each student will be encouraged to begin an original Overlapping Circles design, make fabric selections and continue with the curved piecing construction.
