Judy Mathieson Mariners Compass – Setting A New Course Learn to use paper foundation methods without sewing through the paper. Draft and piece these exciting radiating stars into formal, symmetrical stars of nearly any shape and size or create flashy asymmetrical designs. Original stars or provided patterns will be copied onto freezer paper and then cut into foundations to simplify the piecing process. We will deal with color inspirations as well as how to make the points nice and sharp. www.judymathieson.com Level: Intermediate Supply List

Ruth B. McDowell Designing from Nature We begin the class with an introduction to the methods and techniques I have found successful in my quilts. Then, using the images the students bring, we will discuss the translation of images from nature into a pieced quilt design. Each student will begin their own pieced design, using subjects and seaming techniques attractive to them. Individual time with each student will help them find options and solutions. Some students will work on developing a simple design and be able to finish the top of the quilt; others may choose a more complex image, make the design and template pattern and finish the auditioning of fabric, but not complete the sewing process in class. www.ruthbmcdowell.com Level: Advanced Supply List

Judy Niemeyer Reaching Beyond Tradition with Foundation Paper Piecing Students will have the opportunity to learn a process, which simplifies and minimizes waste that has come to be associated with many common foundation paper piecing methods. Judy’s distinctive approach first involves the use of templates that allow the user to precut the fabric pieces intended for use in her quilts. When using the templates, she teaches her students speed-cutting techniques. There will be an appliqué technique demonstration. Lab fee: Purchase of pattern required www.quiltworx.com Level: All Supply List

Reynola Pakusich Overlapping Circles Using the teacher’s class-handout patterns, you will enjoy developing the interplay of fabrics to create circles which appear to overlap. With the teacher’s guidance in fabric selection, you will be able to make some of the circles appear to lap behind the next circle while others will appear to lap over another circle. Following work with the prepared designs, each student will be encouraged to begin an original Overlapping Circles design, make fabric selections and continue with the curved piecing construction. Nominal Lab Fee. www.reynola.com Level: Intermediate to Advanced Supply List

Pearl P. Pereira Old Point Loma Light “Old Point Loma Light” is the first light house to be erected in Southern California in 1855. Today, the Old Point Loma Light House still stands watch over San Diego, a sentinel to a vanished past and the inspiration for the center of my “California Gold” album quilt. The focus for this workshop is careful prep work for perfect appliqué results. The workshop is designed for all skill levels and will introduce you to new techniques. Learn my “Off the Block” prepared edge freezer paper appliqué techniques and build your appliqué directly on the pattern. We’ll also learn how to make any size “Perfect Bias Stems”, reverse appliqué, sharp points, perfect circles and smooth concave and convex shapes. www.p3designs.com Level: All Supply List
